The ãblawo: A Pragmatic and Ethnolinguistic Analysis of a Plea-Song on the Threshold of Maninka Circumcision

Abstract: Among the Maninka of Hamana (Upper Guinea), on the night preceding circumcision, the bilakoros confined in the kèfadinbon perform the ãblawo, a chant in which they ask the elders to let them greet their mother one last time. Ritual rule requires that this request remain unanswered. Such a chant raises the problem of the pragmatic status of a request that the institution requires to be formulated and forbids to be granted. To address it, this qualitative and exploratory study analyses a single case, the ãblawo recorded in Babila on 15 March 2025 from Koro Kèoulén, a former initiation instructor. It draws on speech act pragmatics (Austin, 1970; Searle, 1969), performance theory (Bauman, 1975; Zumthor, 1983) and Africanist ethnolinguistics (Calame-Griaule, 1965). The pragmatic analysis leads us to propose the notion of “felicity through instituted failure” to designate a request whose ritual success depends on the elders’ regulated non-response. The ethnolinguistic analysis of the chant’s phonic, lexical and structural texture suggests that the separation from the mother, which the ritual will consummate a few hours later, is already inscribed in it. Finally, the recording situation, outside the ritual frame, is interpreted as the sign of a threshold of patrimonialization specific to contemporary oral works.
