The Crisis of Values in Times of Adversity and Resilience in Burkina Faso

Abstract : Values are norms that guide the behaviors and aspirations of individuals within a given social environment. Since every society embodies specific endogenous values, individuals face various challenges in their quest to assert themselves as autonomous economic units (Homo economicus). In this context, it is important to examine the influence of social values on the dynamics of economic performance and resilience. This study aims to assess the endogenous values of young people in Burkina Faso in order to understand their impact on individual and collective economic dynamics. In particular, it seeks to understand the extent to which these values promote or hinder youth resilience in the face of socioeconomic challenges—an issue that is also relevant to other African contexts. The study is based on an approach combining quantitative data collection, systematic observation, and a literature review focusing on social values and the constraints associated with Homo economicus. The results highlight the predominance of values embedded in a social system strongly characterized by conformity to collective norms. Although these values ensure social cohesion, they provide little foundation for the emergence of individual or collective initiatives capable of strengthening resilience in the face of socioeconomic challenges. The study thus concludes that there is a need to rethink the relationship between endogenous values and the development of economic capacities that promote young people’s autonomy and performance.
